E-ONE Aerial Fire Truck Chosen for Safety Features by Alabama Community

When a community goes through a devastating disaster together, the first thing they are usually wondering when the dust finally settles is, "How can we be better prepared next time?" After a destructive F4 tornado ransacked the city of Cullman, Alabama, the community fire department debated that question relentlessly as they did what they could to put their city back together.

It became very clear to everyone in Cullman how important the fire department was in a crisis like a tornado as firemen and members of the National Guard gave out water and other needed assistance to citizens of Cullman. In just eleven short days the city was restored back to full power. The City Council President, Garlan Gudger, was definitely convinced at what an integral part the fire department played in getting the town back on its feet so quickly, stating, "Our community had never been through anything like that storm, we didn't know what we needed until we needed it...So when it came time to order the truck, we told the chief to make sure the truck was fully equipped with everything the department needed."

New E-ONE Aerial '100 Platform for the Fire Department of Cullman, Alabama

With the community behind them, Chief Junior Reinhardt made the call for what type of aerial fire apparatus the city would purchase to give them a better advantage if another similar disaster were to strike Cullman. Choosing E-ONE was a no-brainer.

Several years ago the fire department of Cullman had had an E-ONE unit but it was involved in an accident where the truck rolled over, yet everyone in the cab walked away with only a few cuts and bruises. Knowing that only E-ONE fire trucks provided this type of safety with their custom roll cage cab design, it was an easy choice.

Once the safety aspect was covered, they added some other components to their aerial truck plans to better prepare for any future emergency situations. More scene lighting were placed on the truck along with lifting eyes at the tip of the base section, allowing the truck to lift up to 4,000 pounds. More rescue equipment was also a must-have addition.

Adding a touch of the community, the 100' E-ONE Aerial Platform fire truck featured a black body on a black and gold custom Quest chassis. Bearcat paws adorn the truck along with a gold "C", representing the high school logo and mascot. "This is certainly not your traditional red fire truck, we wanted this truck to be a symbol of community strength and a reminder that if we pull together we can overcome insurmountable odds," Gudger said.

E-ONE Fire Apparatuses are known and proven for their safety. This is just one example story of many others out there. If you are interested in learning more about the safety features of an E-ONE fire truck, fill out this request form here or call us today at 877-538-8220.

Genesis Rescue Tools Go To Work on the Chevy Volt in Crash Course 2011

During Crash Course 2011, there were 10 hands-on stations where 225 students applied their vehicle extrication training to destroy over 200 cars using Genesis Rescue Tools. Under complicated scenarios, students learned to maintain a high level of safety while freeing victims from vehicle wreckage as quickly as possible.

Howell Rescue Systems, Inc. has been doing this Crash Course training for 22 years. For the first time, they brought in someone from the outside to help advance their training course. Ed Hadfield, a crash test engineer from General Motors, joined the team this year and was kind enough to bring a Chevy Volt with him to subject to the extrication tools and training sessions.

The Chevrolet Volt is a special type of vehicle because it is an EREV or Extended Range Electric Vehicle. It's not a hybrid; a hybrid runs on gasoline and electricity in conjunction with each other. The Chevy Volt operates on electricity at all times using a 360 VC high voltage battery. This battery also contains lithium ion technology which needs to be protected in any kind of crash condition. Because of that, most of the vehicle is made of very hard strength material such as press hardened steel (PHS) or martensitic steel.

With these unique features of the Chevy Volt, extrication has to be done slightly different and you have to be sure you have capable rescue tools to get the job done. Howell Rescue Systems was asked to be involved in the Chevy Volt program for these very reasons. The performance and reputation of the Genesis Rescue Tools in the fire service is outstanding and always up for the challenge to demonstrate the brute force their hydraulic tools can produce while also being NFPA 1936 compliant in the safety standards of extrication rescue tools.

Ed Hadfield from General Motors conducted a 2 hour classroom session at Crash Course 2011 as part of the Chevrolet On Star First Responder Training Tour. Everyone in attendance left with a package that they could take back to their own departments and train their own personnel on the special requirements needed to extricate a Chevy Volt. After the training session, students were given the opportunity to put their new knowledge to the test on the unforgiving frame of a Chevy Volt.

The Crash Course from Howell Rescue Systems is the nation's best extrication class. This two day event will offer students hands-on training for scenario-based vehicle extrication. There will be ten stations where students destroy over 200 cars using Genesis Rescue Systems rescue equipment. There will be classes on air hammer extrication techniques, scenario-based extrication techniques, "under riders" vehicle displacement from under semi-trailers, new techniques in displacement with power tools and hand tools, advanced stabilization with a vehicle on its roof and side, techniques of power lifting air bags, car on roof - floor pan removal, rescue over-view and new vehicle designs, side impact extrication, and mechanisms of injury/rapid patient removal. All stations will help educate participants on how they can maintain a high level of safety while freeing victims from vehicle wreckage as quickly as possible.

In addition to the topics mentioned above, Howell Rescue Systems will be teaming up with General Motors to bring students a special session. First responders participating in the 2011 Crash Course will learn direct from GM the safety issues with the new Chevrolet Volt and auto extrication. This is a unique chance for students to learn about the newest auto manufacturing technologies and how they affect emergency extrication and their safety.
